Redefining Fashion: The Journey of Leila Kelleher
Fashion often struggles to accommodate diverse body types, and Leila Kelleher is determined to change that narrative. As a pattern designer and assistant professor at Parsons School of Design, she understands that the fashion industry has historically left plus-size individuals feeling marginalized. Fortunately, Kelleher's creativity and expertise have not only driven her to craft her own garments but also inspired a movement towards more inclusive fashion.
The Importance of Self-Expression in Fashion
Leila's journey began in her youth in Sydney, Australia, where she learned to sew in high school. This skill soon became pivotal in her quest for self-expression. "Plus-size people aren’t always able to express themselves through fashion because the options can be so limited," she says. But by creating her own clothes, Kelleher has set a shining example of how we can bridge the gap between body size and personal style.
Empowering Others Through Inclusivity
Her work extends beyond individual creativity; Kelleher co-founded the sewing pattern brand Muna and Broad, along with a sustainable clothing line for plus-size individuals, called a space, in between. By employing body-first principles informed by her Ph.D. in biomechanics, she designs garments that celebrate all body shapes. This commitment to inclusivity has inspired countless others to embrace their individuality. Kelleher often reminds her students that fashion is not merely about adhering to industry standards—it’s about expressing who you are.
Innovative Solutions for Body Diversity
Through her designs and her teaching at Parsons, Kelleher is redefining industry standards. “A lot of students want to work as personal trainers or in health professions, yet they carry the assumption that a smaller body size equals health,” she observes. Her role in challenging these preconceived notions—taught through her pioneering Fat Fashion course—shows how education can catalyze tangible change.
A Call to Action: Join the Movement
As Kelleher continues her mission, she emphasizes the necessity for change within the industry. Her upcoming book, Plus-Size Patternmaking for Womenswear, aims to arm fashion professionals with the knowledge required to design for diverse bodies.
By supporting entrepreneurs like Kelleher and brands that prioritize inclusivity, we can all contribute to a more equitable fashion landscape. Every choice counts and, together, we can help reshape the future of fashion for a more diverse and colorful world.
